What's Going On Here?

Congratulations!  You're off to a brave and productive start on your TOK journey.  As I mentioned in class, I'd like you to go one step further and define--for yourself, for me, for one another, and for visitors here--what it is we're up to.  Theory of Knowledge is sometimes called a course in practical philosophy, a study of metacognition, and an epistemological investigation.  But so what?  For Thursday morning, please write a thoughtful, thorough paragraph describing the course as you see it. As I'm delighted one of you asked in class, yes, it can also be funny.  We'll use your descriptions to assemble a collective blurb for our blog.

  1. I believe that the Theory Of Knowledge course, is a challenging and somewhat twisted way of learning about learning. It teaches something that people tend to overlook, but that is vital to understand what we as a group do actually know. Most of the time, you end up learning that you do not actually know how you know things, or that in fact, you do not know anything. By the end of class, you will have a headache from thinking in circles, and attempting to understand all the possible ways of knowing something, but you are intrigued to continue learning in order to find out these answers. In general, TOK is a class that introduces students to an important aspect of life, and teaches them to question what may already be "known-fact", because there undoubtedly is a logical fallacy or unknown aspect of what people know or think they know.

  2. I see the Theory of Knowledge course as an opportunity to venture outside of the typical box of learning. It is an opportunity to question the norm, and question how the norm came to be. It inspires people to find a deeper explanation for something, rather than saying "because someone told me so." I believe the TOK course helps students be more aware of the language surounding them. My informind people about logic and ways of knowing, helps students craft a strong logical argument. There are almost no black and white answers in TOK, and as long as you back something up with logic, it can be considered. TOK is a creative outlet, as it allows students to put their think about their ideas, be critical about them, and make connections with them. It's a course designed to help students be more knowledgeable about knowledge.

  3. Do you think you can think? Do you really know that you know? In the class of Theory of Knowledge, those neglected elements which support human to learn, to analyze, and to conclude are unveiled. We explore the underlying wonder of our knowledge and dig out those profound ways of how our brain functions. From this class, we know better about the nature of knowledge, proper ways of knowing, and potential problems when learning.

  4. Theory of Knowledge is a course that leads our brains outside of class and space. It does not require students to remember knowledge that professors teach like other class, but inspires us to gain knowledge of the world. There is no identify the scope of TOK. Theory of Knowledge encourages divergent and critical thinking. Theory of Knowledge guides us to learn from each other, and improves the way of our thinking in order to promote efficiency in the other area of study.

  5. The theory of knowledge course is a journey of exploring what we know and how we know what we know by constantly asking,"How do I know?" The most challenging thing about the course is maintaining your sanity while constantly having to question and second guess yourself before saying something. On the bright side, by the end of the course we will be fully equipped to effectively attack and find fallacies in the arguments of people around us. We will also be in a position to confuse others after confusing ourselves.

  6. TOK. Theory of Knowledge. How we know what we know. How we know that we know what we know. To be honest this course confuses me to the end of the world and back. In fact can there really be on set definition for the acronym TOK? I dont think so. I think that TOK involves many ways of thinking and philosophy and ideas. TOK means to think critically about everything, to ask questions that are not normally asked, to play devils advocate with yourself. I can not say that TOK has a set definition because the course and its content is so broad, because it gives you room to think for yourself and make up your own conclusions. I see this course as a way to confuse myself and others with ways of thinking and how thinking can evolve into much more than an idea. Theory of Knowledge, to me, helps you try to think in different ways. For example, the riddles, and paradoxes. It helps you become an effective problem solver for any situation because the course forces you to step outside of the way you usually think and to know the way you often think you have to think about the way in which you think. I guess to say in a probably very vague nutshell that TOK is the study of your thinking and the way that you know how to think.

  7. You have now entered our class Theory of Knowledge (TOK) blog. First things first; What is TOK and why should I care about it?
TOK is a class designed by the International Baccalaureate Program that invites it's students to think critically, logically, and peripherally. It explores the different schools of thought, philosophy, and epistemology (if you don't know what this is, read our blog!). It's about asking the right questions rather than finding the right answers (although life would make much more sense if we could find those as well) and it's about using the phrase "But how do you know?" So please, sit down and enjoy our blog if you're curious as to how some high school students explore our thoughts and the way we perceive the world..

  8. TOK, the Theory of Knowledge course, is centered around exploring what students think and what they think we know. It forces you to apply what you have learned in life and in the class to think critically about whatever is being discussed. TOK allows one to leave their comfort zone and be open minded when thinking. Most of the time, there are no right answers to the questions we discuss in TOK and almost everything is debatable. This course is challenge especially when facing the question of, how do we even know what we know? I think that TOK helps student become more well rounded and open minded in their thinking and learn to critically analyze what we learn and know.

  9. Theory of Knowledge is a course that revolves around a single question: How do we know what we know? Although the question we are more interested in is: why do we want to know how we know? In this class, we, as knowers, are challenged to explore the different ways of knowing and evaluating how important and dependable they are in different situations. Thinking about thinking is intriguing, but side effects include brain-melting, ear-popping, eye-crossing, and jaw-dropping moments of the Knower. In the end, the Theory of Knowledge course inspire us to become diverse and creative thinkers who are capable of breaking the box of acquisition.
I am fascinated by TOK because I have never thought in such a way that is so daring. Although I am not used to thinking about knowledge and my favorite way of knowing, logic, has made me question the reality of the tangible world. I am encouraged to push and escape the boundaries that I have stayed within before. I am often in awe at the famous philosophers who were able to see through all the distractions of the world and concentrate on what is truly real. Being a part of this course has also made me understand how and why things are the way that they are, by connecting it back to knowledge.

  10. Theory of knowledge is a course that helps us to know the different ways that we use while gaining knowledge and while applying that knowledge. This helps students to analyze deeply and question themselves how they come up with ideas, actions or beliefs. The main purpose of this course is to demystify the question that many people can't answer, "How do I know that I know?". TOK is such an interesting class that will help you to have a sense of understanding on what you believe to be true, but also criticize its foundation. Theory of knowledge is mainly intended to bring perplexity about the ways of knowing in students which helps them to share their own ideas and learn from each other how they get to understand.

  11. The theory of knowledge course was designed to utilize many ways of problem analyses and other important thinking skills to evolve possibles solutions to particular arguments and issues by considering the causes and effects of each answer chosen . With using the theory of knowledge , one may eventually discover that there is always a right answer to most arguments presented, but many ways to come about that answer. TOK will then not only challenge the way an individual perceives things to be , but will also teach and individual how to go about breaking down an argument into several components and use different ways of thinking to evolve a solution. In other simpler words TOK teaches you how to think and understand the different ways of thinking . This particular course allows individuals to share how through thinking and the different means of thinking they arrived at certain conclusions that they perceived as being correct.

  13. Theory of Knowledge, otherwise known as TOK, is a course which tests how well you think, how willing you are to think, and of course, patience. This fun, yet challenging, and mind numbing course challenges why you know what you know. It questions every way of knowing and builds off the question how do we know what we know? If you believe you know the answer, you're probably wrong. But that is okay, because with this course you are able to explore and discover how you know what you know! Through terrible puzzles and intriguing discussion, it is possible to come up with the answer. So why not give it a try!

  14. What is TOK? TOK is an IB class where students learn about the Theory of Knowledge. I see the class as a place where we inquire about learning. It is an extremely confusing but very mind stimulating as well. In TOK, we are forced to think about the things that we look past on an everyday basis, like thinking itself. It pushes our minds out of the boxes that we set up and broadens our view on everything. We also learn to deal with the fact that most of the big questions that we ask have no actual ‘answer’.

  15. Theory of Knowledge is a course designed to significantly develop brain activity as well as severe migraines. Topics and discussions often result in disappointment, confusion, frustration, homicidal urges, and (rarely), satisfaction. The content of the class generally revolves around student discussions, ranging from the origins of "hoes" to logical fallacies. Experience within a Theory of Knowledge classroom will turn a student into an argumentative beast with the skills to always prove YOU wrong. Without a doubt, TOK is the most life changing (and quite possibly corrupting) course a young thinker has access to in this day and age.

  16. TOK aka Theory of Knowledge (welcome to the world of IB, where we abbreviate everything and anything. This course includes thinking outside the box, arguing, proving what you know (if you know anything at all...), brain scrambling and fascination. If you are a straight forward, linear thinker like me, you will go insane during this course and start to get headaches. TOK: Mass confusion since 2013!
