Saving You From a Life of Crime
I told you this was the most importent course in the world. Thirty-one years after he first proved that ice cream and accordions do mix, "Weird Al" Yankovic is back to insure that you're use of language is more than a way of knowing that you don't know what your talking about. Watch this video. Twice. Does anything you c make you blush? Is their a rule or a example there about which you're unsure? Considering you're in the middle of writing your extended essay isn't now a great time to make absolutely certain that you arent perpetrating a crime? Is the answer to all of these questions the same? For my extended Essay I am currently exploring the field microbiology while specifically targeting the growth of the yeast in the human body. So far on my extended essay journey one of the most interesting discoveries I’ve made is that yeast is can be said to be one of the most important ingredients in beer manufacturing. Despite its seemingly bad reputation for causing illnesses and discomforts yeast is one important organism that is commonly overlooked. The role of yeasts in beer production is to simply change wort into beer while adding sweet flavor and aroma. They do this by a process called fermentation and this process allows them to alter or change the flavor or smell of other ingredients. Now breweries all over the world grow yeasts many large yeast colonies many for different flavors. So technically this simple unicellular organism is really a “fun-guy” (Get it?) because he brings the beers to the parties. This fact was interesting to me because it’s quite ironic that these simple organisms that are usually overlooked play such huge roles.

I am writing my extended essay on the topic of Capoeira, and I am specifically focusing on the African roots of the game. Reading through the book, I learned many things about Capoeira's history, so it is hard to pick out what discovery is the most interesting. I did not know much about Capoeira before starting this Extended Essay research project, so this process has exposed me to a new part of dance. One of the most interesting discoveries that I learned from my research is that there are two distinct styles of Capoeira. Capoeira Regional is the Brazilian Capoeira, as well as the modern and more popular style. The music played for Capoeira Regional is fast, and the players or ‘Capoeiristas’ move faster and more aggressively. In this style, capoeiristas are also ranked according to their skill. Capoeira Angola is much slower in terms of the music and movement of players, or “Angoleiros”. The movement of Angoleiros is close to the ground, and less aggressive than the movement of Capoeiristas. I find this information very interesting not only because I had no prior knowledge of it, but also because it answered some questions that I had and sparked new questions. It lead me to the conclusion that the people of Angola and Brazil have deep cultural connections because of the slaves brought from Angola to Brazil. However, I was left wondering if the differences between these two styles of Capoeira are reflections of the difference between the cultures of Angola and Brazil. Most importantly, this discovery tied the bigger idea of my research together. Capoeira's West Central African roots are still preserved in the game, but depending on the instructor, the style, and the place where you play Capoeira, its African roots will be be more visible or less visible. Capoeira is one art form, but it is also a broad one that includes two very different styles due to the many cultural backgrounds associated with it.

While working on my extended essay, I have learned quite a bit about how important an influence is in childhood. In short, I'm studying bildungsroman novels that also tie in themes of racism. Both protagonist (out of my two books) have influences who are African-American during the turbulent early 20th century in the south. Analyzing this further has made me conclude that influences are only as important as the individual makes them to be. While both protagonists have huge negative influences in their life, both chose to learn lessons from the good influences. This discovery put a new meaning to the phrase "find the silver lining," or "make the best with what you've got." I found this discovery to be meaningful, as before I always considered all sources of influence to equally impact the individual.

ReplyDeleteI have based my extended essay on colorism in contomporary America. For those who are not sure of what colorism is, it is the act of discrimination and segregation against ones's own race. The race I choose to study is the African American race where colorism is most prevelant. Through my research I have not only learned a lot about my race, but how we may think subconsciously. In the book, "Color Matters", I came upon this idea of 'Black Think'. 'Black Think' defines what it means to be black and rejets anything that does not fit into the definition. 'Black Think' attempts to determine who is "really Black" and who is not Black enough. 'Black Think' is not only based on color, but on how you look, your lineage, your beliefs, what kind of music you like and your concepts of social nature (Color Matters 158 and 163). not living in the suburbs
not listening to “White” music
not marrying a White person
not acting "White" (excelling in school, doing homework, being in AP or Honors courses, taking the initiative)

Hmmmm. Most Black people have subjected themselves to thinking that Black people should not excel in school, or have light skin, or talk "proper", or that they should have bone straight hair. Instead they should fail in school and become a bum, speak so that nobody undertsands them, and trace their ancestors back to slavery. Who wants to know that their family went through the African Holocaust? This concept of 'Black Think' makes me think that because of the series of horrific events that Black people have gone through, they are now diconnecting themselves from their lighter brothers and sisters because of bitterness and jelousy. In doing this they are perpetuating exactly the thing that was done to generations of us before our time, discriminating and segreating. It is as if most Black people think that they don't desereve an education, or to speak with conviction or to live in the suburbs. It's sad because I know Black people today who think in a 'Black Think' manner.
As Part of my research for my EE on contemporary artists' take on traditional landscape art, I went to see real Chinese landscape. Which was why I traveled to Qinghai, in the northwestern region of China, where the mountains are more majestic. Qinghai is not fully developed, and mostly inhabited by Tibetans. There, I was able to see landscape that is relatively raw, as the ancient landscape painters would have seen it. Upon my own experience of the landscape, I felt the balance between the mountains and the water, and how that would contribute to the composition of a painting. That leads to my discovery of the fact that a Chinese landscape painting is not a realistic representation of nature as it is, it is more of a fiction interpretation of a landscape seen by the artist, therefore, I think of landscape art as not an image of a mountain, but of the mind of the artist. In that way, landscape art could be the forefather if Impressionism and expressionism, edging even into modern and contemporary art.
ReplyDeleteThe grammatical error that I would like to correct is in the sentence "is their a rule...". "There" should replace "their" in that sentence.
For my extended essay, I chose to write about how the Tunnels of Cu Chi aided the Viet Cong in the Vietnam war. Because these tunnels were underground, when the American’s first arrived at their bases they would be attacked and be unable to locate where their enemy was. One example of this was Operation Crimp. Americans wanted to build a Cu Chi base, and so they bombarded and destroyed the whole area. People above ground were captured and moved. However, guerrillas stayed put. The U.S unknowingly set up camp right above the underground network of tunnels (Mangold 127). This allowed for stealthy attacks at night using claymores and other explosives. The attacks went on for seven nights, and were never detected (Mangold 127). The Americans would check and re-check the perimeter of their camp, and would come up with nothing. Little did they know, they were sitting directly on top of their enemy. The fact that the Viet Cong was able to hide a whole section of their army from the Americans while still attacking them is completely mind-blowing.

The most interesting discovery to date from my EE which is focused on the common bacteria called yeast and its connection to food consumption, is that there are both “good” and “bad” forms of yeast. In my experiment I find that higher levels of sugar will cause a growth of yeast population, indicating that diets with higher levels of sugar consumption will cause an increase of yeast in one’s body. However, I have learned through research that this yeast is a prime example of “bad yeast”, while there are other forms of yeast that are extremely beneficial to one’s body, and are proven to be great immune system boosters. I find this interesting, because I realize that many things in our world may have a bad reputation for being harmful to our bodies such as yeast or even sugar, but they also have different kinds of these things that our bodies need such as the “good” yeast and the glucose which are needed for our body to create energy.

My extended essay is focused on the use of metaphors, the comparison of factual events and the use emotion by Martin Luther King Jr in his speeches to change public opinion on racial segregation in the United States of America. Through doing my research one of the most interesting things I discovered about Martin Luther King Jr is his fear. I know that this is a very simple sentence and point to note but it was one of the most shocking discoveries I came across. Martin Luther King Jr had been a baptist minister who was accustomed to giving sermons on Sunday mornings. One might have assumed that he would have been use to speaking in front of large crowds but it was the complete opposite.King had feared making public speeches. Maybe it was because of the new message he would be speaking on or the pressure that was placed on him to be a voice of change and represent a race. King had even openly admitted that it had never come across his mind to be an advocate against racial segregation until his potential was summoned by several church members. King had been afraid to speak out against segregation and had even thought about ending his social activist career. This was shocking to me because most history books and websites show King as being a strong, fearless leader. I will not deny the fact that King was and still is one of the most influential and fearless leaders to be a voice against racial segregation, but I find it both comforting and shocking to know that his biggest fear was his career.
My discovery on King's fears then made me read his speeches and literary works from a different point of view. While analysing King's literary works most of them spoke out against fear and moved towards freedom and bravery. Could this have been King using his personal experiences to influence others or was he trying to give this piece of advice to others in hope that it would be a trait that he would later inherit ?

Maya Angelou once said, "People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel". This quote is related to the most interesting thing I learnt while working on my Extended Essay. While revising Maya Angelou’s autobiographies, I kept thinking about our emotions and how much they mean to us. I found out that our emotions might be the dearest thing that we carry with us. The most interesting thing that I have learned is that the knowledge we gain through our emotions is not easily forgotten as the knowledge we acquire through other areas of knowing. I always considered Angelou’s autobiographies as fiction sometimes. This is because I didn’t believe that Angelou would remember many details of how she felt during her childhood. For example in the autobiography, “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings”, Angelou mentions of her different encounters and how she felt most of the times in her mother’s store with detailed information. I came to realize that Angelou’s unforgettable emotions are what helped her to remember her different experiences in the past. Angelou is able to recalls her different experiences and moments because she deeply remembers how they made her feel. Angelou remembers the store because of its unique atmospheric comfort that she adored. In general, I learnt that we easily recall our emotions more than anything else and that they also mean a lot to us more than we think.

ReplyDeleteFor now, I have basically read through some of the materials that I found. It is really interesting to look at the mathematicians in different time periods working in the same field about Maths in different ways and under different conditions. For example, John Napier approached logarithm by investigating trigonometry, such as sines, tangents, and secants. Henry Briggs used six methods which include square roots, finite differences and many others. For Leonard Euler, he invented the symbol "e" ( natural logarithm) for the mathematical world based on Napier's work. Napier is definitely the father of logarithm. The other two mathematicians further developed Napier's work and largely improved the use of logarithm. All of them have brought deep influences to the field of Maths.
While working on my extended essay throughout the summer, I have found multiple interesting discoveries from my vast collection of sources. My extended essay is based on Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), which is what recent bee disappearances have been referred to. In my research paper I explore the multiple theories of CCD as well as creating my very own theory. Recently, an interesting theory I have come across is the use of IMD (imidacloprid) in plants and soil that bees encounter while they pollinate. IMD is a very common ingredient in GAUCHO, which is a very popular insecticide. IMD is very harmful to insects, especially bees, and while it does not kill them immediately, it can have negative effects on their immune system. During the late 20th century, French beekeepers realized that IMD could be killing their bees and immediately hit the street to protest the use of IMD on plants. This new discovery has drastically altered the course of my paper. Previously, I thought that the primary cause of CCD was simply Genetically Modified crops and the pesticides that are used to grow and sustain them. However, now, I have integrated the French theory into my final analysis.

For my extended essay, I am finding and analyzing data in order to answer the question: what are the effects of space radiation on the nervous system? I am specifically looking at data from experiments that have been performed on mice. Something that I had found to be very interesting was how similarly cognitive functions of the mice were affected by cosmic radiation in comparison to those of astronauts who were exposed in space. Astronauts can be exposed to anywhere from 6 to 100 cGy (56)Fe radiation; a significant amount of mice that were exposed to these amounts suffered from persistent reduction in the spatial learning and severe deficits in hippocampus-dependent neurocognitive tasks depending on the amount of exposure. This shows just a portion of the risks that astronauts face when going out to space.
ReplyDeletecorrection: I’m honestly having a hard time finding an error that I’m certain I can correct correctly. I think that maybe “considering you’re in the middle…” should be “considering that you’re in the middle...”, but it might just be preference.
My most interesting discovery I have made from my EE is that nitrogen, phosphate, and potassium levels in fertilizer do not work nearly as fast as simply using water. In just four days, almost all of my bean seeds submerged in tap water have germinated. However, only one seed, with the assistance of fertilizer, had germinated after 6 days. This had made me question whether fertilizer was more for plant strength, rather than quickness of it's growth.
